ISLAMABAD, Sept 9: PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday and exchanged views with him on the current political situation.

According to a press release, the PML-Q leaders expressed sympathy for the people affected by rains and floods in Sindh and said their party would support all measures taken by the federal government to provide relief in affected areas. Government officials said that since the meeting had taken place in the family wing of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, they had been told to issue only a brief press release.

But PML-Q sources said the Chaudhrys had met the prime minister to convey complaints of cabinet members belonging to their party.

The PML-Q ministers have been unhappy over the treatment meted out to them by the PPP and their main complaint is that they have no hiring and firing powers.

As part of a deal between the PPP and PML-Q in January, the lat ter was given 18 positions in the federal cabinet -- seven ministers, seven ministers of state, two advisers and two special assistants to the prime minister.

But skirmishes over important portfolios started within the PMLQ ministers soon after they had taken oath on May 2.

Riaz Hussain Pirzada refused to take the minority affairs ministry and threatened to resign if the portfolio was not changed. The Chaudhrys gave him the ministry of health.

Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema, a relative of the Chaudhrys, who was initially given the health ministry, was moved to the production ministry.

And some ministers belonging to the party lost their portfolios after the devolution of various federal ministries under the 18th Amendment. The government created three new ministries to accommodate them. These are: national harmony, human resource development and professional and technical training.

Akram Masih Gill was made Minister of State for National Harmony. Riaz Pirzada was given the Ministry of Professional and Technical Training. He was not happy and once said: “It’s better to be a simple MNA than to hold a ministry which only exists on papers.” A PML-Q lawmaker said: “People in our constituencies want jobs, but none of our ministers is in a position to do anything for anybody. It’s useless to keep these ministries and attend cabinet meetings.” He said most PML-Q ministers were not happy with their ministries.

Government’s un-constitutional steps have put the people and the system in disarray.

Delay in Local Governments elections will result in increased poverty and extremism.
The Prime Minister’s role is not to point out problems but to implement solutions.

Moonis Elahi, senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League has said that since February 08, various un-constitutional decisions of the Federal and Punjab governments have put the people and the system in a constant state of disarray and confusion. Local governments are the bedrock of a democratic system and the recent un-constitutional decision of an indefinite postponement of local governments elections amounts to depriving people of their fundamental democratic rights. Denying people the right to choose their local governments was a despotic move which would have highly adverse effects on the future of democracy in Pakistan. The government should withdraw this undemocratic decision in the best interest of democracy.

Moonis Elahi, said this while talking to a delegation of Muslim League leaders and workers in Lahore yesterday. He said that the Prime Minister by recently dubbing the present state of affairs in the country as a hodgepodge cannot condone himself from his basic responsibility of finding solutions to the problems.

Moonis Elahi further said that Shahbaz government was afraid to hold local governments elections in the province on account of its failure in fulfilling the promises made to the people of the province at election time. He was of the view that Shahbaz government in order to save its own skin and to avoid public embarrassment was putting the entire democratic system at stake. He pointed out at the expensive media campaign of Shahbaz government against Pakistan Muslim League Nazims and the subsequent failure of Shahbaz and his men from proving even one Nazim guilty of the so called irregularities. He said that after its unsuccessful character assassination attempts against the Nazims now the Shahbaz government in cohorts with its coalition partner in the centre had un- constitutionally decided to impose government administrators as replacements of elected Nazims. He expressed his grave concern on the constant violations by both PPP and “N” league of the country’s constitution, the charter of democracy and the promises made by Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto with the people of Pakistan.

He warned the government that the undemocratic and illegal decision of postponement of local governments elections would further intensify feelings of deprivation in the masses and encourage extremist tendencies. He said that the beauty of the local governments system was in its direct contact of Nazims and councilors with the people for resolution of their basic problems. He strongly criticized Shahbaz government’s decision of relying on unelected cronies and incompetent government servants instead of popularly elected Nazims and councilors who enjoyed the trust and confidence of the people.

He declared that Pakistan Muslim League will challenge this un-constitutional decision and demanded that the government instead of shirking its responsibility should immediately announce the election schedule for local governments as per the constitution and the demand of the people.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain announced on Wednesday that his party has dropped its objections to a parliamentary committee to be formed to evolve consensus on constitutional amendments and decided to join it.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan met Chaudhry Shujaat at latter’s residence to persuade him to join the committee. He told the PML-Q chief that all issues of national importance would be addressed by the committee in consultation with major political parties and groups.

The minister said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the Pakistan People’s Party had authorised him to meet the PML-Q leadership because the government was following a policy of reconciliation and wanted to meet the challenges confronted by the country with the support of all political forces.

PML-Q’s secretary general Mushahid Hussain Sayed, its Punjab chief Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Leader of the Opposition in Senate Wasim Sajjad attended the meeting and assured the minister that their party would support the government on all national issues.

The PML-Q decided not to join the committee after Leader of the House in Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari piloted a resolution without consulting it.

LAHORE: Nukes are national asset and the nation will not accept any compromise on Pakistan’s nuclear programme at any cost, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Shujaat Hussain said on Friday.

Talking to reporters during his visit to the residence of martyred Major Abid Majeed who laid down his life during the military operation in Swat, he said, “The nation can endure poverty and hunger but cannot tolerate any compromise on nuclear assets.” According to APP news agency, he said protection of atomic arsenal was the responsibility of every Pakistani, and any condition jeopardising nuclear assets would not be accepted even if an aid of $100 billion was offered.

He said the government and its allied parties should clear their position in this regard and tell the United States categorically that Pakistan’s nuclear programme was completely secure.

Regarding the Swat situation, Shujaat said the country was passing through a critical juncture, and all parties should set aside their political differences and unite for the country. He said those not supporting the military offensive against the Taliban lacked national thinking, Online reported. He said the PML-Q would announce its strategy with regards to the Swat operation later.

Shujaat said the internally displaced persons (IDPs) were unfortunately facing a shortage of food. He said they should not be called refugees because they were living in their own country. He urged the nation to help the IDPs whole-heartedly because they had sacrificed for Pakistan’s better future. Our priority should be national interest instead of personal gains, he said, adding that we could overcome the current crises through joint efforts.

He said he had proposed to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to call an all-parties conference on the Balochistan issue.

LAHORE: President Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain has said that there is no need to convene another All Party Conference on Swat operation and those who are not supporting military offensive against militants lack national thinking.

Talibanization was increasing and we have to set aside differences and get united in the current circumstances, he said this while talking to media men on Friday after condoling with family of Major Abid who embraced Shahdat in operation Rahe-e-Rast.

The President PML-Q went on to say his Party would announce its strategy with regard to Swat operation.

Answering to a question, the President PML-Q said, unfortunately internally displaced people are facing food shortage and other inconvenience in their own homes and they should not be called as refuges because they are living in their homes.

He asked the nation to help IDPs whole-heartedly because they have sacrificed for Pakistan’s better future. Our priority should be national interest instead of personnel, he said. We can overcome current crises through joint efforts, Shujaat said. He said the nation is helping IDPs more than Government. We have to get united to steer country out of crises, he urged.

When asked about Balochistan, he said, the issue of Balochistan should be resolved immediately and it is turning bad to worse with each passing day. We have proposed an APC on Balochistan issue and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has promised to convene, he said.

President PML-Q Ch. Shujaat Hussain when asked about Pakistan’s nukes said the nuclear arsenal in safe hands. No one can take over Pakistan, he said.

ISLAMABAD: The All Parties Conference preferred not to praise the role of armed forces in ongoing military offensive against Taliban militants in Swat.

A 16-point resolution was adopted at the end of the APC only after deleting paragraph-5 from the original draft.

‘...endorsed the role of armed and security forces of Pakistan in the present situation and grieved the Shahadat of personnel of these forces,’ the paragraph-5 in the original draft resolution read.

But the final draft, approved by the APC, did not comprise that paragraph.

According to PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the pro-army paragraph was deleted at the behest of PML-Nawaz, Jamat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema Islam and other parties.

He claimed the PML-N and JI threatened to boycott the meeting if the paragraph remained in the final draft.

Shujaat claimed only his party and the Muttahida Quami Movement called for praising the role of armed forces.

He claimed a two-hour debate was held on this particular issue, but Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani decided to delete the pro-army paragraph to save the APC.
