He said that Kalabagh dam is a permanent solution of the current energy crisis unlike the temporary IPPs being acquired on rental basis.
He stated that the need of the hour is a leadership that has a sound power vision and the will to rid the nation of its current gigantic problems including load shedding and acute shortage of water for agricultural, industrial and domestic consumption. He claimed that despite all odds Pakistan Muslim League was the only political party that had kept Kalabagh dam on top if its manifesto while “N” league soon after coming into power in 2008 had surreptitiously withdrawn the demand for Kalabagh dam from its agenda.
He said that “N” league’s U turn on Kalabagh dam had borne disastrous implications on the consensus building process regarding the mega project among the provinces. He reiterated that the achievement of a national consensus was imperative for the materialization of Kalabagh dam.
He said that construction of Kalabagh dam was in the best interest of the country and the current energy crisis should serve as an eye opener for the Kalabagh dam opponents. He declared that he was ready to volunteer his services for the cause and would work with all political parties, concerned groups and stake holders to build a positive consensus on the Kalabagh dam project. In this regard he said that he had even offered the present C.M. Punjab’s son Mr. Hamza Shahbaz to join hands with him in a campaign to convince smaller provinces for the realization of this all important project.
Moonis Elahi further stated that his father Ch. Perviaz Elahi as the Chief Minister of Punjab ,as part of the consensus building process had offered to withdraw Punjab’s direct share from Kalabagh dam water for irrigation purposes but ironically “N” league soon after attaining power in 2008 unilaterally dropped Kalabagh dam from its agenda thus rendering irreparable damage to the process of consensus building among provinces on the construction of the much required dam . He showed his surprise at the recent news item according to which “N” league will now push smaller provinces for the construction of the Kalabagh dam and called it a grotesque u turn.
He expressed his doubts on this change of N government’s stance and called it a mere political gimmick of Nawaz league to befool the public once again.
Moonis Elahi reemphasized the fact that 42.6 MAF of water was annually falling un-utilized in the sea and the construction of all hydral power projects including Kalabagh dam was the only course open to the nation for a sustainable and expeditious economic growth.
He made an appeal to all political parties of the country to come together in the completion of Kalabagh dam for a bright and better future of the coming generations.
