Lahore (13 September 2011) The Pakistan Peoples’ Party Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Waraich and General Secretary Sami Ullah Khan called on Chaudhry Parvez Elahi the senior central leader of the Pakistan Muslim League and senior federal minister here in State Guest House today. The overall political climate of the province and the coming bye-election in Sahiwal for the Punjab assembly seat were discussed in the meeting.

It was decided in the meeting that the Pakistan Muslim League and the Pakistan Peoples’ Party will field a joint candidate in the PP 220 bye-election while the name of the consensus candidate will be finalized by the two parties. In the 2008 election this seat was won by the PML but the winning candidate reneged. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s government in Punjab had paid special attention to the development of Sahiwal and strong resentment was shown by the people when the winning candidate crossed the assembly floor.

‘Q’, PPP to finalise joint candidates soon: Shujaat

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday said the PPP-PML-Q alliance would finalise the names of its joint candidates for the next general elections after two weeks.
“We will finalise our seat adjustment formula after two weeks. The Zulfiqar Mirza episode delayed the meeting between the two parties for the purpose, otherwise the names would have been finalised by now,” he said in an exclusive talk with Pakistan Today.
He said both parties had identified as many as 65 National Assembly constituencies in Punjab where they would face no trouble in fielding joint candidates.
“In other constituencies, the two parties will reach a consensus after going through inter-party consultations,” Shujaat said.
The PML-Q president clarified that it had not been agreed between the PPP and the PML-Q leadership that both parties would not field their candidates against their sitting MNAs in the next general elections.
“In a general understanding, both parties will try to not field candidates against sitting PPP and PML-Q MNAs but the final decisions in this regard will be taken shortly,” he said.

PPP, PML-Q decide to expand

coalition to provinces

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and President Asif Ali Zardari have agreed to expand the coalition government to other parts of the country, and under the agreement three PML-Q nominees would be adjusted in the Sindh cabinet soon. A source told Pakistan Today that Shehryar Mehr would be made a provincial minister while Halim Adil Shaikh and Aijaz Shah Shirazi would be made advisers in Sindh. The PML-Q would also be given two ministries in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and under the agreement, Mirza Hussain and Bashir Ahmed would be made ministers in the GB government. Ahmed is currently leader of the opposition in the GB Assembly.
Later, Shujaat called on Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and shared with him details of his meeting with President Zardari. Gilani said that the country needed political stability in order to ensure socio-economic development. He said that external challenges facing the country also required that political forces across party lines developed consensus and put up a united front against these challenges. The prime minister said that the government tried to present a balanced budget in tight economic conditions. He said that it would welcome suggestions from the opposition. The PML-Q chief assured Gilani that his party would contribute positively to the debate on budget and support the government in facing the challenges.
