Lahore: 29 August, 2001: Ch. Parvez Elahi, senior central leader of Pakistan Muslim League and senior federal minister has strongly resented at the existing sad plight of Punjab government institutions meant for welfare of the province’s neglected and deprived children. He has accused Punjab’s self tiled Khadim Aala of wreaking his vengeance on the highly essential institutions because they were established by the earlier (Q) government. This also resulted in the flight of foreign support previously guaranteed for these projects, he further remarked. While talking to a delegation of Punjab Legislators belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League today Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said that his government had established the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Punjab as a department in 2004. The driving force behind this department was my personal motivation to alleviate the miseries of children begging at traffic signals and in busy squares. From the camel children to the socially neglected young ones we had arranged accommodation, education and social support for thousands of such most neglected children of Punjab. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said that the department of Child Protection & Welfare Bureau was established through an Act of the Punjab Assembly. He said that under this initiative his government had gone about setting up child protection institute, child protection units, child help line, open reception center and special schools for these children. These child protection units were established at Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur. We provided shelter to more than 10,000 children separated from their love ones. Such children also included the 2005 earthquake Pakistan victims. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi accused Shahbaz Sharif government for trying its level best to destroy all such public welfare initiatives credited to Parvez Elahi’s earlier government of Punjab. They also tried their best to send the traffic wardens packing because of their extreme narrow mindedness and political animosity, he further alleged. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said that by withdrawing support of a department meant to provide shelter to the unfortunate children of the society, Punjab government had done a great disservice to the society at large and the poor and neglected children in particular. He called it an unpardonable act of revenge committed by Shahbaz Sharif administration.
