Police brutality in Punjab: Opp leader demands CM’s resignation

LAHORE: Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Zaheeruddin on Friday demanded Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif to resign from office over the ‘brutal’ police torture of citizens across the province.

Zaheer, while addressing a press conference at the Opposition Leader’s Chamber at Punjab Assembly premises, demanded Shahbaz to apologise to the people of Punjab for his ‘negligence and bad governance’. He also demanded that the Punjab Assembly be called into session over the law and order situation of the province.

Zaheer said police stations in Punjab had become the “nursery of crimes” and the province had become a hub of “inhumane activities” under the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led government. He said human right violations had increased manifold in the province due to the government’s ‘loose grip’ over administrative matters. The opposition leader also urged the CM to take action against PML-N Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Shahid Bhatti who was present at the scene when police officers tortured some citizens in Chiniot.

Zaheer also alleged that all PML-N members were involved in different crimes and some of them had already been exposed in electricity and credit card scams. Shahbaz should “recheck” his party members’ political-cum-ethical credibility, he added.

Talking about Law Minister Rana Sanaullah’s illegal plaza, he said he was not satisfied with the report of the technical committee constituted by the government on the matter. Zaheer said he had also issued written orders to the committee to find out the facts and directed it to report to him without further delay. staff report
